Vesuvius** is the only active volcano in continental Europe. Its last eruption was in 1944.
How to get there from Naples
By car: A3 motorway, exit Ercolano. Then provincial road to the car park at 1000m altitude.
By public transport: Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi + EAV Busvia del Vesuvio shuttle bus.

The path to the crater
From the car park, 800 metres of trail (approx. 20-30 minutes) lead to the crater at 1281m.
The path is well signposted but uphill. Comfortable shoes mandatory!

- Panoramic view of the entire Gulf of Naples
- On a clear day you can see Capri, Ischia and the Amalfi Coast

When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal. Avoid midday in summer (too hot) and winter with snow.
The sunset from the crater is spectacular, check closing times.
