Getting Around Naples: Transport and Practical Tips

A complete guide to the metro, bus, funicular and Circumvesuviana for getting around Naples

Getting around in Naples: everything you need to know

Naples has an extensive public transport network, although it may seem chaotic at first glance. With this guide you will know exactly how to get around the city and to the main tourist destinations.

Metro Line 1: the most useful means of transport

The Metro Line 1 is the best way to get around Naples. It connects the central station (Garibaldi) to the historic centre, the Quartieri Spagnoli and Vomero.

Useful stops for tourists

  • Garibaldi - Central Station, Circumvesuviana
  • University - Corso Umberto, near the port
  • Toledo - Via Toledo, Quartieri Spagnoli (the most beautiful station in the world!)
  • Dante - Port'Alba, historic centre
  • Museo - National Archaeological Museum
  • Vanvitelli - Vomero, shopping

Single ticket: €1.30 (90 minutes). Daily: €4.50. Weekly: €15.80.

Funiculars

Naples has 4 funiculars connecting the centre to the hills. The most useful for tourists:

  • Central Funicular - From Via Toledo to Vomero (Piazza Fuga). The most used.
  • Montesanto Funicular - From Montesanto to Vomero (Via Morghen).
  • Funicular railway of Chiaia - From Piazza Amedeo to the Vomero.

Same ticket as the metro. Timetable: 7am-10pm (approx.). Check the updated timetable.

Bus

The bus network covers the whole city, but routes can be confusing. The most useful lines:

  • R2 - Central Station → Port (Molo Beverello) → Piazza Municipio
  • 140 - Posillipo and the coast
  • C16, C18 - Minor centres and hilly areas

Tickets at newsstands and tobacconists. Same as metro tickets.

Circumvesuviana: for Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento

The regional train connecting Naples to archaeological destinations and the Sorrento Peninsula. Departure from Napoli Garibaldi (lower level of the Central Station).

  • Ercolano Scavi - 20 minutes, €2.80
  • Pompeii Scavi - 35 minutes, €3.60
  • Sorrento - 65 minutes, €4.20

Frequency: every 20-30 minutes. Can be crowded. Keep an eye on your belongings.

Ferries and hydrofoils

Ferries leave from the port of Naples for the islands and the coast:

  • Molo Beverello - Hydrofoils to Capri, Ischia, Procida
  • Calata Porta di Massa - Slow ferries to the islands
  • Mergellina - Hydrofoils to Capri and Ischia

Taxi in Naples

Taxis in Naples have fixed rates for the main tourist routes (displayed in the car):

  • Airport → Centre: €19-23 (fixed rate)
  • Central Station → Port: €11
  • Centre → Vomero: €10

Take only official white taxis with meters. Always ask for the fixed fare before setting off.

Walking: the best way

The historic centre of Naples is compact and pedestrian-friendly. Almost everything can be reached on foot: Via Toledo, Spaccanapoli, Piazza del Plebiscito, Quartieri Spagnoli, the Port. It is the best way to discover the city.
