Naples' must-see attractions
Naples is one of the richest cities in the world in terms of history, art and culture. With over 2800 years of history, every corner hides a treasure. Here is our complete guide to what to see in Naples.
UNESCO Historic Centre
The historic centre of Naples has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 and is the largest in Europe. Getting lost in its alleys is a unique experience.
Spaccanapoli
The street that literally 'splits' the historic centre in two. Walk along Via Benedetto Croce and Via San Biagio dei Librai to immerse yourself in authentic Naples: craft workshops, Baroque churches, street food and Neapolitan daily life.
Sansevero Chapel and the Veiled Christ
The sculpture of the Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino (1753) is considered one of the masterpieces of world sculpture. The marble veil seems transparent, an illusion that leaves one breathless.
Via Francesco De Sanctis, 19 - Ticket: €10 - Closed Tuesdays - Online reservation recommended to avoid queues.
Naples Cathedral and the miracle of San Gennaro
The cathedral houses ampullae containing the blood of San Gennaro, the city's patron saint. The miracle of liquefaction is repeated three times a year (September, December, May). Free admission.
San Gregorio Armeno
The famous street of nativity scenes, where master craftsmen create statuettes and nativity scenes all year round. Not only sacred figures: you will also find caricatures of politicians, footballers and celebrities.
Castles and fortresses
Castel dell'Ovo
The oldest castle in Naples, on the islet of Megaride. According to legend, Virgil hid a magic egg in the foundations: if it breaks, Naples will fall. Free entrance, spectacular views over the Gulf.
Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino)
Imposing medieval fortress in Piazza Municipio. The white marble Arch of Triumph at the entrance is a Renaissance masterpiece. Civic Museum inside. Ticket: €6.
Castel Sant'Elmo
At the top of the Vomero hill, it offers the most spectacular panoramic view over all of Naples, the Gulf and Vesuvius. Reachable by funicular railway. Ticket: €5.
Unmissable museums
National Archaeological Museum (MANN)
One of the most important archaeological museums in the world. It houses the Farnese Collection, mosaics and frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the Secret Cabinet. Ticket: €18. Museum Square, 19.
Museum and Real Bosco di Capodimonte
Bourbon palace with an exceptional picture gallery: Caravaggio, Titian, Raphael. The surrounding park is perfect for a stroll. Ticket: €12.
MADRE - Museum of Contemporary Art
For contemporary art lovers: permanent installations by international artists in a historic building. Via Settembrini, 79.
The promenade and the sea
Lungomare Caracciolo
Considered one of the most beautiful promenades in Italy. Stroll from Mergellina to Castel dell'Ovo admiring Vesuvius and the Gulf. Perfect at sunset.
Posillipo
The hillside district with breathtaking views. The Parco Virgiliano offers views of Capri, Ischia, Procida and Vesuvius. Descend to Marechiaro for a romantic dinner by the sea.
Naples Underground
Beneath the city lies 40 metres of history: Greek and Roman aqueducts, World War II air-raid shelters, catacombs and tunnels. Guided tours depart from Piazza San Gaetano (€12, duration 2 hours).
