Street Food Naples: What to Eat and Where to Find It

The definitive guide to Neapolitan street food: from fried pizza to cuoppo

Naples: the capital of Italian street food

Naples is the home of street food. Here, street food is not a fad, it is a centuries-old tradition. Strolling through the alleys of the old city centre you will find fried-food shops, pizzerias by the slice and stalls churning out delicacies at unbeatable prices.

The musts of Neapolitan street food

Pizza a Portafoglio

A whole margherita pizza folded in four and eaten while walking. Costs only €1-2. You can find it in dozens of pizzerias, especially in Via dei Tribunali and Via Toledo. Try it at Sorbillo Lievito Madre and Di Matteo.

Pizza Fritta

Pizza dough stuffed with ricotta, cicoli, provola and pepper, then fried in hot oil. Crispy outside, soft inside. Costs €2-3. The best: Antica Pizza Fritta da Zia Esterina Sorbillo (Via dei Tribunali) and Fernanda (Pignasecca).

Cuoppo Fritto

A paper cone filled with mixed fritters: potato crocchè, arancini, seaweed zeppole, zucchini flowers, pasta fritters. €3-5. Not to be missed at Friggitoria Vomero and at Fiorenzano (Pignasecca).

Sfogliatella

The sweet symbol of Naples, in two versions: riccia (crunchy, layered) and frolla (soft). Filled with ricotta, semolina and candied fruit. €1.50-2. The best? Sfogliatella Mary (Galleria Umberto I) and Pintauro (Via Toledo, since 1785).

Tarallo Sugna e Pepe

Salty crunchy doughnut with lard and pepper. The perfect walking snack. €0.50-1. You can find it in all bakeries in the centre.

Frittatina di Pasta

Macaroni with béchamel sauce, peas and provolone cheese, breaded and fried. A taste bomb to eat on the fly. €2-3.

Where to find the best street food

Via dei Tribunali

The street with the most fried food and pizzerias. From one end to the other you will find irresistible temptations. Di Matteo at number 94 is an institution.

Pignasecca

The oldest market in Naples, between the Quartieri Spagnoli and Via Toledo. Here you can find fried fish, crocchè and sandwiches at popular prices.

Via Toledo

The shopping street hides gastronomic gems. Pintauro for sfogliatelle, Sorbillo Lievito Madre for pizza a portafoglio.

How much does it cost to eat street food in Naples

For €10-15 you can have a full street food lunch wandering around the alleys. Here's an example:

  • Pizza a portafoglio: €1.50
  • Fried Cuoppo: €4
  • Sfogliatella: €2
  • Coffee: €1
  • Total: €8.50
